7,62x51

7,62x51 is a well spread calibre in the western world. It was created in USA in early 50th as a NATO calibre. Sweden decided to adopt the calibre 1962 and came into use 1964 in the AK4. The KSP 58 was re barrelled from 6,5x55 to 7,62x51 and renamed KSP 58B. The latest contribute is the KSP94, wich is a German made MG3 mounted on the 121-122 main battle tank.

*About the projectiles material; the jacket was changed 1980 from tombac plated steel to solid tombac. There are two reasons for changing the jackets material. Firstly, the quality in production of the tombac jacket is higher than the quality of the steel jacket. That leads to a better precision for the ammunition. But the main reason for the change is that the tombac jacked bullet wears less on the barrel of the gun. The drawback is a higher price of the ammunition. I don't know how big a differens there is.

This is a grenade cartridge for rifle smoke grenade 1 or the AK4. The grenade is put over the barrels end. Maximum range of the grenade is ca 300 meters and the smoking time is ca 50 seconds. The cartridges neck has a rose petal closure and is sealed. The grenade cartridge does not normally cycle the rifle, so reloading has to be don by hand.

This is the blank ammunition for PSG90. PSG90 has no blank firing device, so the blank cartridge is without the normal bullet of wood. When using blank ammunition in PSG90 you use a special magazine that's shortened inside to not accept normal ammunition. Risk range for the ammunition is 10 meters. The cartridge shown here is made 1992, which is said to be the first year of production for the Swedish defence. It is made by Bakelittfabrikken, Norway

The projectile has a hard metal core that gives the ammunition a very good penetration on hard targets. Conventional AP ammunition uses hard steel as a penetrator. The Tungsten material have a much higher density, which makes the penetrator much heavier than a steel penetrator of the same size. The projectile penetrates at least 15 mm steel at 300 meters or 20 mm of steel at 100 meters.
The cartridge on the picture is stamped as made 1984. That is a truth with modification. The case is made then, but the ammunition is built 1987.

This is the Swedish defences new ammunition for PSG 90. It will increase the range from 800 meters to 1000 meters, one shot, one kill. The projectile is sub calibre and has a diameter of 4,81 mm. Its kept in a sabot made of plastic and aluminium that releases from the projectile after it left the barrel. If you want to read more about the ammunition i recommend FMV:s site www.fmv.se There you will find a LOT of good information on the ammunition. The ammunition is made in USA by Winchester, and is a development of Winchesters SLAP (Saboted light armour piercing) ammunition. The development is much around the sabot to make the ammunition more accurate. 1998 Winchester got a order for one million rounds.

I would like to give a big thanks to Morten Støen for this pictures and for good additional information!
