5,56x45 is the same caliber as the civilian .223 Remington. It first appeared as an experimental caliber in USA for the rifle AR-15, and made service in USA's defense 1964 for their new rifle M16. In Sweden it was introduced in about 1985 and is used for the automatic carbine AK5 and for the machine gun KSP90.
