It was accepted in February 25th in 1868 It has loaded with black powder. The case mouth is sealed with wax, and the wax is still soft to the touch after a hundred years. The case length is a bit shorter than the live round, 33 mm compared to the full length cartridge of ca 42 mm. I do not know why the case is shorter, but the probable explanations seems to be for easy recognition, or even more probable, cost savings through reducing the amount of material used in the case. I have also heard that the cases is probably reused spent cases from live rounds, but I have no written source of it yet.
